FATHER GIUSEPPE GISSI, PMS (Barletta April 21, 1939 – Rome November 12, 2022)
On the morning of November 12, 2022, after considerable suffering, he passed into God's hands. Born in Barletta, then in the province of Bari, in 1939, he entered the student house of the Piccola Missione per i Sordomuti (Small Mission for the Deaf) in Rome in 1952, making his first religious profession in 1958.
He was ordained as a priest in Bologna in 1966. In 1976 he obtained special qualification for teaching deaf-mutes and taught at Gualandi institutes in Rome, Bologna, Florence, Giulianova and Catania. He also served as director of the Turin institute for the deaf at Pianezza.
He was the final director of the Gualandi institute in Giulianova, where he also served as ecclesiastical assistant to MAS, the Apostolic Movement for the Deaf.
He spent his final years in houses of the Piccola Missione in Florence and Rome. After a lengthy illness and surgical operations, he joined the Lord at age 83 on November 12, 2022, at the Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore care facility.
Marked by the cross of illness from his youth, he knew how to carry it with love, leaving us an example of life and acceptance of God's will day by day.
His funeral was celebrated together with that of Father Giustino Rovai on Monday, November 14, at the parish church of the Holy Patrons of Italy, near the former Gualandi Institute. Ten priests concelebrated with great participation from many former students and MAS members.
He found rest at the Verano cemetery in Rome, in the tomb of the Piccola Missione per i Sordomuti.
Remembering Father Giuseppe's gentleness, his dedication and attention to others, his profound goodness and fidelity to the Piccola Missione per i Sordomuti, we accompany his departure with intense emotion and prayer.
