Celebration of the Holy Archangels

September 29 - Feast of the Holy Archangels

MICHAEL (Who is like God?) stands as the archangel who rises against Satan and his followers (Jude 9; Rev 12:7; cf. Zech 13:1-2). He serves as defender of God's friends (Dan 10:13, 21) and protector of His people (Dan 12:1).

GABRIEL (Strength of God) ranks among the spirits standing before God (Luke 1:19). He reveals to Daniel the secrets of God's plan (Dan 8:16; 9:21-22), announces to Zechariah the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:11-20), and to Mary the coming birth of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38).

RAPHAEL (God has healed) numbers among the seven angels standing before God's throne (Tobit 12:15; cf. Rev 8:2). He accompanies and guards Tobias through the trials of his journey and heals his blind father.

Holy Archangels celebration September 29

Saint Gabriel the Archangel serves as the supreme announcer of divine revelations.

He fulfilled three great missions.

The first toward Daniel, precisely indicating the seventy weeks of years before the Redeemer's coming.

The second toward Zechariah, predicting the birth of Saint John the Baptist and punishing him with deafness and muteness for his disbelief.

The third was the Annunciation to Mary of Jesus's birth.

Patron of Communications

For this reason, he is considered the Angel of the Incarnation.

Through the prayer of the Ave Maria, we Catholics daily repeat the same words of the celestial Herald to the Virgin: "Hail, Mary, full of grace."

Pope Pius XII, with the Apostolic Brief "Quoniam omne datum," on January 12, 1951 proclaimed "Saint Gabriel Archangel Celestial Patron of Telecommunications and Their Workers and Directors," with all liturgical honors and privileges that, according to rite, belong to principal patrons of associations.

In 1972, Pope Paul VI further extended his patronage to all postal services.

In Islamic theology, Gabriel performs the function of intermediary in divine revelation to Muhammad, as he dictated the Quran to him.
